The ability to look at the potential in the city’s young people has inspired Bristol-based Boomsatsuma to take a different approach to education. Boomsatsuma specialises in post 16-education with specialist skills training focused on skills needed in the creative industries.
With project-based learning at its core, good staff to student ratios enabling bespoke learning experiences and a focus on preparing students for employment, Boomsatsuma offers a unique educational experience, from level 3 college courses through to degrees.
Since launching in 2011, it has expanded across five centres around Bristol, connecting with the diverse communities across the city – and wider – with programmes also running in Weston-Super-Mare, South Gloucester and Bath.
Their staff are dedicated to bringing opportunities to young people from all backgrounds and giving them a voice in the West Country’s expanding creative industries sector. Boomsatsuma was one of Bristol’s best kept secrets for many years, but has attracted some attention over recent years, not least when it won the Bristol Diversity Award in 2020, followed up with Bristol Life Awards for Education in 2021 and 2023.
Specialisation in teaching creative and technical skills relies on strong partnerships with local
creative industries employers, including the BBC, CineWest, Doghouse Productions, Films@59, Plimsoll, the Royal Photographic Society and Silverback.
College courses include Creative and Digital Media, Sports Media Production, Film and Television, Photography and Games, VR and VFX. Degree courses in Film Production and Post-Production, Game Art, Game Design and Photography allow students to specialise further.
