Bristol City Leap launches £1.5 million fund to energise local communities
Bristol City Leap has unveiled its Community Energy Fund, a £1.5 million initiative spanning the next five years to bolster community-based energy projects in Bristol. The fund aims to accelerate decarbonization and secure lasting benefits for local residents through diverse endeavors, such as renewable energy generation and behavior-change programs.
Eligible groups, including charities, faith organizations, and schools, can seek grants and interest-free loans of up to £100,000 via Bristol City Leap’s website. The Centre for Sustainable Energy will oversee grant applications, and Bristol & Bath Regional Capital will administer loans, while Bristol Energy Network will offer support in the application and project development process.
James Sterling, Communications and Engagement Manager for Bristol City Leap, expressed enthusiasm for the fund, which he said would empower local communities in their journey toward carbon neutrality.
Funded by Ameresco and Vattenfall Heat UK, the £1.5 million initiative is part of Bristol City Leap’s broader goal to generate £61.5 million in social value over the first five years of its partnership. Jenny Curtis, Managing Director at Vattenfall Heat UK, emphasized the importance of collaboration and community involvement.
Applications are encouraged from all Bristol communities, with an emphasis on engaging new community groups and organizations that have not previously received funding for their projects. Councillor Kye Dudd, Cabinet Member for Environment, Ecology, Energy, and Waste, underlined the significance of community participation in the city’s decarbonization efforts.
The Bristol City Leap Community Energy Fund presents a promising opportunity for diverse community groups to join forces in working toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly Bristol. Interested organizations can submit their applications through the Bristol City Leap website.
