Bristol Traineeship Programme continues to tackle youth unemployment despite lockdown
As businesses struggle to navigate the impact of the pandemic and the number of people claiming universal credit rises, it is harder than ever for young people to find employment.
To tackle this issue, Bristol24/7 partnered with Weston College and in November launched the Better Business Traineeship Programme, providing fully-funded opportunities for young people looking to get onto the career ladder and seek to benefit from training, coaching and access to jobs.
Despite the challenges posed by the latest national lockdown, the scheme has continued to provide these opportunities and help to tackle a lack of apprenticeship vacancies in the city.
Just 48 hours after the lockdown was introduced, Weston College converted the entire training provision online so trainees could continue without disruption.
Various employers across Bristol are in the process of offering work placements in business administration, childcare and construction – with the view to hiring trainees following completion of the programme.

Dave Crew is the head of employer partnerships at Weston College.
He said: “Despite this latest lockdown, the Bristol Traineeship Programme continues to drive forward. The ten trainees who joined us before Christmas have embraced the training being provided, and their enthusiasm is reflected in 100 per cent attendance and positive approach, despite challenging times.”
James, a trainee enrolled on the scheme, said he is really enjoying the work, adding: “It’s given me a routine which I’ve needed in lockdown.”
Employers are able to get involved with the scheme by offering placements, taking part in mock interviews, Dragons Den activities and talking to the trainees about the realities of working in their industry.
Anyone interested in the Business Traineeship Programme is advised to email [email protected] to contact the college who will arrange support, placements and further progression to employment.
