Studio Giggle’s short film captures the five stages of grief during lockdown

By Safiya Bashir  Friday Jan 22, 2021

Studio Giggle is the Bristol-based studio that captured the nation’s “five stages of grief” throughout lockdown.

The team filmed themselves acting out denial, bargaining, anger and depression using motion capture suits and technology, before sanitising the equipment and passing it on to another team members house to repeat the process.

The result is a digital art film that portrays the shift in moods for two characters trying to keep busy over lockdown and the importance of online communication to stay in touch with loved ones. Isolation was even featured on Film Shortage’s Daily Short Pick.

Inspired by this film and the work that can be carried out remotely, Studio Giggle is now using technology to raise the value of virtual events. Through combining augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality, the film and animation company is using an XR Studio to host live panel discussions with speakers able to dial in around the world.

In September 2020, Studio Giggle used the XR Studio for the CVC Capital Partners annual investor meeting. Thanks to the technology, Studio Giggle was able to “beam in” the US CEO from New York to interact live with a speaker on stage in London.

Following on from the event, Studio Giggle will be producing Manchester United Football Club’s events for their sponsorship partners. The events will allow the partners to interact with a Manchester United “legend”, watch exclusive content and live interviews.

Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, founder and creative director of Studio Giggle, Steve Garratt, said he remains optimistic for the next year.

“We never could have predicted how the world changed in 2020, everything that we thought we knew changed, it was an incredibly strange time,” Steve says. “But I’m really proud of all the hard work our team has put in and we’re somewhat optimistic about 2021.”
