BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

By Josh OHara  Thursday Dec 1, 2022

Cloud computing is a piece of technology that has revolutionized multiple industries. It has completely changed how businesses operate or perform their operations. The biggest benefit of cloud computing for businesses and companies is that it allows them to access information, data, documents, and applications from anywhere in the world through the internet.

For non-profit organizations that have limited resources and lack sufficient capital to afford other technologies, expensive hardware, or software, cloud computing can be a profitable tool for them. Cloud computing is a technology that non-profit organizations and businesses should start using due to its various advantages and cost-effectiveness. Below we have discussed some of the benefits of cloud computing for non-profit organizations and why they should adopt cloud computing:

Easy Accessibility Of Data
Not only for nonprofit organizations but for every business out there, data is very important. Data drives all the decisions of a company or organization. Every organization needs relevant information using which they can come up with sustainable and effective strategies that will help the organization grow. Therefore, for nonprofits, it is important to have a system that can help them with data gathering and also provide an easy and simple way to access & share data readily without compromising security.

This is where cloud computing or cloud storage becomes essential for nonprofits. The cloud allows nonprofits or any other company to access information on the go through any internet-connected device via a central web interface, similar to how connected users can access the wireless router’s settings on a WiFi network through a centralized IP address i.e 192.168.1.1. Anyone with the correct credential can access data and share it with others without compromising security. This is very useful for nonprofit organizations that have members actively on the go, traveling here & there around the country.

Consistency In Information Is Maintained
Another significant advantage of the cloud is that it ensures that consistency is maintained in information. Every cloud service provider has multiple servers and all of them are configured by default in such a way that any change made on the server or any file that has been added or removed is synchronized in real-time. This ensures that anyone who has access to the cloud can make changes or edits in real-time. Those edits will be automatically synchronized across the server so that every user has access to the latest information.

This is a very useful feature that helps a lot in collaboration. It minimizes the risk of mistakes or inaccurate information because all the team members that are working on the same project or same file can see the latest changes being made in real-time. In the cloud, all the hosted files are stored in one central place, just as the settings of your WiFi router are stored in a central place on 192.168.0.1. All the latest changes are synchronized in real-time across the server and anyone who has access to the cloud server can access the latest and updated files.

Easy Scalability
Nonprofit organizations are different from other businesses and constantly face operational changes. Sometimes they face heavy projects in which even the workers don’t get time to themselves and sometimes everything is quiet for a while. This constant change between projects and funding also means that your information management system also faces periods of ups and down. With conventional physical servers, you cannot scale up or down. When you buy computing resources, they are constant and you will have to get the job done with those resources only.

However, with the cloud, you get the option to upgrade and downgrade your computing resources at any time so that your information system doesn’t face periods of underutilization and you also don’t suffer when you are receiving heavy projects. Every cloud service out there works on a subscription basis where you pay for the resources that you use and not for the extra resources. Along with this, you also have the option to increase or decrease computing resources according to the demands.

Excellent Backup And Disaster Recovery System
The cloud also allows for easy backup restoration. Since nonprofits don’t usually have enough resources to have automated backup systems in place, they typically struggle when there is an emergency or disaster. During such unusual events, nonprofits end up losing most of their data but not anymore.

The cloud is an effective backup and disaster recovery system as you can configure your cloud platform to make automated backups of the data on a regular basis such as daily or weekly and save them on a remote server, different from the primary server. So that in case a disaster or emergency does happen, nonprofits will be able to get their data back and keep their operations running with minimal downtime.
