Bristol cafe chain goes into insolvent liquidation

By Beth Owen  Wednesday Jul 31, 2019

The independent cafe and bar chain Grounded has gone into insolvent liquidation.

The group has five branches across Bristol, owned by property developer Tobie Holbrook.

Grounded closed the doors of its Thornbury branch at the beginning of the month and previously closed its Henleaze cafe.

Grounded in Henleaze opened its doors in January 2017

The insolvency announcement was posted on the official public records site The Gazette on Friday, July 26.

It is not yet known what will happen to remaining branches, based in Brislington, Bedminster, Fishponds, Horfield and St George. The company’s social media accounts are still active.

Bristol24/7 contacted Holbrook to seek further clarification.

Responding to the insolvency reports, he said: “Business as usual at Grounded and we are enjoying the sunshine.”

He continued “Regrettably, we have closed two sites in Bristol, Henleaze and Thornbury, that weren’t working for us, but our other eight sites are thriving.”

Despite repeated efforts to request further information about the future of the cafes, no further response was given.

The chain also has branches in Keynsham, Chippenham and Corsham in addition to its five Bristol branches.

This is just one in a series of high street businesses struggling to stay afloat amid a number of high profile closures, including the recent demise of Ceres in Stokes Croft.
