Bristol employers launch new group to tackle cost-of-living crisis

By Charlie Watts  Monday May 15, 2023

Eighteen employers across Bristol have formed a new group to support their staff amid the cost-of-living crisis.

The Bristol Financial Resilience Action Group share a vision and mission to make Bristol the most financially resilient city in the UK.

The founding members  represent 25,180 employees between them and include Bristol City Council, Avon Fire and Rescue and North Bristol NHS Trust.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

The group is an initiative of financial company Hargreaves Lansdown, whose headquarters on Anchor Road was used to officially launch the programme on Thursday.

Speaking at the launch event, Chris Hill, CEO of Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “Hargreaves Lansdown considers it of utmost importance to ensure the community we exist in thrives and our analysis shows that Bristol specifically has a lack of financial resilience.

“We have developed this pilot programme to bring employers together in Bristol to work towards a shared vision and goal of addressing this lack of financial resilience.

“We hope, through this initiative, that Bristol Financial Resilience Action Group will be the catalyst of change needed to improve the financial resilience of those in the workplace.”

Mayor Marvin Rees was also present at the event, adding that the group will contribute to the council’s work “building a better Bristol where nobody is left behind and everybody has the chance to share in our city’s success.”

The group has been formed following Hargreaves Lansdown’s research into financial resilience, which found a third of households do not have enough in the bank to cover three months of essential spending.

The group encourages employers to sign up to three commitments: six aspirational initiatives; financial education for employees; and financial resilience webinars.
