Don’t miss out on the Bristol Litter Blitz

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Sep 24, 2020

Bristol’s Autumn Litter Blitz is happening with special measures to help litter pickers stay safe. During lockdown everyone realised just how vital our outdoor spaces, streets and parks are to our physical and mental wellbeing.

This makes Bristol Waste’s Autumn Litter Blitz more relevant than ever before. We all need to look after the spaces that nourish the community and we have until October 18 to do our bit for Bristol.

Gathering outdoors, in safe groups of up to six, pickers enjoy sharing healthy exercise with family, friends or colleagues while clearing their chosen patch. Picking up that crisp bag is perfectly safe when wearing gloves. Last year 334 Bristol volunteers collected 290 bags of litter, which is quite a lot of crisp bags.

Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

Gemma Annan, Community Engagement officer at Bristol Waste, said: ‘The whole team have been working hard to bring back litter picking in a way that’s safe and in line with government guidance in time for the Autumn Litter Blitz. It feels more important than ever to give people an opportunity to show their appreciation for the outdoors. Litter picking is a great activity that supports local communities as well as the environment.

If everyone did a just little bit the whole city would be clean in no time. Just remember to stay safe, pick smart, less than 6, and 2 metres apart.’

Pandemic Blitz kit support
To stay in line with government guidance Bristol Waste set up a physically distant litter picking kit. Just collect and drop-off station at their Bristol Waste community engagement HQ.  There’s a new health and safety checklist to read and sign when hiring the kit. Just 6 litter pickers can be hired per team. Each team is advised on how to follow physical distancing rules.

Joining the Autumn Litter Blitz
Anyone can take part. If you need to hire kit, head over to the Bristol Waste website and put in a request on the Autumn Litter Blitz page: bristolwastecompany.co.uk/litterblitz

Bristol Waste Company is the city’s local recycling, waste collection and street cleansing company. They also run the two Household Waste Recycling Centres in the city and are working closely with Bristol City Council to build a third. www.bristolwastecompany.co.uk
