Bristol’s inclusive tech fair
As Bristol’s tech sector continues to boom, there is growing recognition that widening skills-gaps could hinder future progress.
In a bid to encourage more people into companies in the region and boost diversity in an industry that remains dominated by white men, Women’s Tech Hub is hosting a unique two-day careers fair, in collaboration with High Tech Bristol and Bath and Desklodge.
“Bristol prides itself on its collaborations and in its diversity – it doesn’t always do things right, but the aim is always there,” explains Serrie-justine Chapman, co-founder of Women’s Tech Hub.
“We had to consider what issues were associated with barriers to attending careers fairs, especially for women. Many of these issues also rang true for other groups of people.
“Careers fair teams can be difficult to engage with and to overcome this, we will have our volunteers on hand to make personal introductions.”
The free event will be held at Desklodge on March 15 and 16
Held at Desklodge on Redcliffe Way, the Tech3Shed Tech Careers Fair is free to attend and takes place on Friday, March 15 and Saturday 16, with an emphasis on diversity.
There will be workshops showcasing some of the latest tech, TEDx speakers and training initiatives, including the new Women in Cyber Academy and Deloitte, showcasing its free internship/training initiative, among others
Serrie adds: “The industry is finally realising it needs to put some money into closing the skills gap through training initiatives, which in turn makes the industry much more accessible to anyone regardless of gender, ethnicity, physical attributes or anything really.”
The event is the first of its kind in the sector and is open to all interested parties. There will be no recruiters present.
