Bristol’s universities pioneer 5G trial network
The government is awarding £16 million to the universities of Bristol, Surrey and King’s College London to develop a 5G test network in partnership with 5G research institutions.
The plan is to bring together academic expertise and commercial nous to test 5G signals in a real-world environment in early 2018.
5G will prime our mobile devices for the heavy data demands of the future, such as sharing virtual reality clips, and could be applied in autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, and smart agriculture.
Professor Nishan Canagarajah, pro vice-chancellor for research at the University of Bristol, which is heavily involved in 5G research and experimentation, says that telecommunications technologies is a key area of focus for the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.
But the city as a whole is well-positioned to harness the technology. Maria Korea, programme manager for the four-year University of Bristol 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme cites a rich digital SME ecosystem and collaborative city leadership, plus technical expertise, capabilities and industry partnerships, as reasons why Bristolians can expect the fast deployment of 5G technologies at scale.
