BRL join quest to find 700,000 technicians
Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is backing a new campaign to find the next generation of technicians, joining forces with the BBC, Microsoft, Royal Air Force and other industry leaders to fill an estimated 700,000 jobs anticipated over the next decade.
The national campaign – Technicians Make it Happen – launched by the Gatsby Foundation, challenges outdated stereotypes of who technicians are and what they do. The campaign aims to show all the amazing jobs out there for young people and those seeking a change of career.
Sam Forbes is a Robotics Research Technician at BRL. Growing up on a farm sparked Sam’s interest in engineering, and studying technical subjects at school paved the way for his career at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory: “Industrial robots traditionally have been dangerous to work around, but we are designing robots with sensors which allow them to detect the presence of people and react accordingly.”
Michelle Rea, Gatsby’s Education team, said: “More than 25 per cent of employers working in science, technology, engineering and maths are already reporting difficulty in recruiting technicians. By working with Bristol Robotics Laboratory, we can expose more amazing career opportunities, as technicians really do make it happen.
