Community urged to show its support as Hamilton House bid is rejected
Coexist, the residential management team at the iconic Stokes Croft landmark Hamilton House, has seen its first bid to buy the building rejected by the building’s owners Connolly & Callaghan (C&C).
Undeterred, Coexist are putting together a second bid, but they need the support of the local community to strengthen their hand in negotiations.
To foster the support needed, the full details and latest updates of the second bid will be on show as part of a public exhibition from Thursday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 7, starting at 6pm.
After rejecting an initial offer of £5.5 million, C&C have agreed to work with Coexist over the next few weeks to improve their bid, with a final decision expected at the end of June. However, C&C may not sell the building if there is no acceptable bid.
For the last 9 years, Coexist has made Hamilton House a home for over 200 artists, alongside small businesses and NGOs, but their plans for the future are far more ambitious than that.
In addition to £3 million of renovation work, the team hope to install a rooftop eco-hostel made out of straw bales, a co-working space, and a new crèche facility to support the many freelancers stationed in the building.
They also want to improve accessibility to its Wellbeing facility, which offers various massages and therapies, and overall sustainability by transforming the building into an independent, community-owned energy station.
Jamie Pike, Founder of Coexist, said, “The local community has been an intrinsic part of the bid process since day one: many of the elements of the bid were drawn from or inspired by consultation with the community, and at the event people will again have the opportunity to share their responses to the final bid.
“It is important for us that the local community share their responses to the bid at this event, particularly as the owners have expressed that if there’s a strong will for the community to become investors in HH it would significantly strengthen our bid.”
The exhibition at Hamilton House Gallery, is free to attend and open from Thursday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 7 from 6pm until 8.30pm. More information can be found here: https://www.hamiltonhouse.org/event/the-evolution-of-another-world/.
