Courses for freelance filmmakers in Bristol
Freelance filmmakers are invited to take part in leadership and marketing courses as part of a drive to improve diversity in the sector.
A report from the Work Foundation in 2017 found that just three per cent of employees in UK production were from a black or minority ethnic (BME) background, 20 per cent were women and only five per cent of screen workers considered themselves to be disabled.
This autumn, Bristol-based freelancers will be able to benefit from two subsidised one-day training courses, supported by the ScreenSkills Film Skills Fund, with contributions from UK film productions and Bristol UNESCO City of Film.

ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK’s screen industries, hopes the subsidised rates will encourage more people from underrepresented backgrounds to participate and help address skills gaps in the sector, as well as improving diversity.
Both courses will be delivered by TaylorKerek and will be aimed at helping filmmakers develop their social media marketing and leadership skills.
‘Introduction to Leadership for Filmmakers’ will take participants through key leadership skills, including building trust and inspiring creativity, for anyone who is in a leadership role or would like to move into a managerial position.
‘Marketing via Social Media for Film and Filmmakers’ will equip people to start using social media with specific aims, whether they are working for a production company, running a film-related campaign or simply promoting their own professional and creative life online.

Hannah Corneck of ScreenSkills says: “We are delighted to work with Taylor Kerek to support film professionals in Bristol and the South West.
“With continuing steady growth in production, it is critical that we tackle the skills shortages identified by industry with targeted training all over the UK. This is how the sector will continue to flourish.”
‘Marketing via Social Media for Film and Filmmakers’ will take place at M Shed on Saturday, October 5 from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
‘Introduction to Leadership for Filmmakers’ will take place at the same venue on Thursday, October 9 from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Each course costs £25 full price (usually £125) or £10 at a reduced cost (plus a booking fee).
