Entrepreneur wins ?50k tech award
Dr. Becky Sage, CEO of iSci, has taken home the prize for Enabling and Emerging Technologies at the Innovate UK infocus awards, a government-funded scheme that seeks to support inspiring women in innovation today and tomorrow.
The award includes a support package of mentoring, media training and investor preparation, and a £50,000 grant which will go towards developing the company’s latest product, the Nano Simbox, an educational tool that visualises nanoscopic molecular behaviour.
“Working as a CEO in an innovative new start up you face many challenges everyday so winning the women in innovation award is a very welcome celebration for all the hard work that we, as a team, have put in so far and motivation for moving forward,” Becky commented. “It is so important that women are highlighted for their achievements in science, technology and business in order to show other people that someone with inherently female qualities can retain their femininity and thrive in innovative environments. There are some in built challenges that make it harder to be a woman in these environments, but I know that all the women that I have met who are in leadership roles in male dominated fields have shown great resilience to be there and are more rounded leaders for it.”
Chief executive of Innovate UK, Dr. Ruth McKernan CBE says: “There are so many talented women with great business ideas. The UK economy would be improved by a better gender balance in our entrepreneurs and business leaders. 2016 has been a ground-breaking year for us, and I hope that in supporting and telling the stories of our finalists and winners, we can inspire others to succeed.”
