Environmental startup to feature in Grand Designs’ live show
An environmental company, based in St Philip’s, has been selected to appear in Grand Designs Live.
Matter, which develops technology to stop plastic pollution reaching the natural environment, has been selected as one of Kevin McCloud’s ‘Green Heroes’ for its environmentally friendly invention.
Its microfibre filter, Gulp – which catches up to 90 per cent of microfibres from every laundry cycle and stops them from being flushed into our waterways, is the device which caught McCloud’s attention.
In October 2022, Matter smashed its Kickstarter campaign target for Gulp within half an hour of launching.

The campaign to save plastic pollution from laundry, ‘one gulp at a time’ raised over £130,000 in total, landing Gulp in the top four per cent of Kickstarter projects at the time.
One of the biggest sources of microplastics entering our ecosystem comes from microfibres in our clothes which are released during a washing machine cycle.
Each time we do our laundry, up to 700,000 microplastic particles from our clothes can be released from our washing machine – which highlights the need for an invention like Gulp.
Matter will be showcases its product at Grand Designs’ live show which will take place in London’s ExCeL Centre from April 27 until May 9.
Each year, the renowned television presenter, who has been presenting Grand Designs since it first appeared on our screens in 1999, selects a number of heroes in the business sector to celebrate the top conceptual and eco-friendly construction ideas.
CEO Adam Root, who founded Matter in 2018 said he feels “honoured” that Gulp has been selected as one of McCloud’s 2023 ‘Green Heroes’.
He added: “Kevin’s commitment to promoting upcycling and his focus on creating a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature has always been a source of inspiration for me.
“We look forward to presenting Gulp at Grand Designs Live in April and showing how our product can help tackle microplastic pollution from laundry and empower people to make a positive impact right from the comfort of their own homes.”
Gulp will be available to buy later in 2023 and is currently available to pre order online.
