Free courses for women and girls to inspire digital careers

By Michael Ranahan  Thursday Aug 22, 2019

A Bristol community interest company is working with the Women into Digital Jobs, Education & Training (WIDJET) programme to provide free courses in a multitude of pioneering digital courses.

boomsatsuma are offering taster sessions and eight-week courses in exciting fields such as virtual reality, augmented reality and games design.

WIDJET is a scheme promoted by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), which is made up of three of the councils in the region – Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

West of England mayor Tim Bowles said: “I’m very pleased that WECA is working with boomsatsuma to help even more people in this way.

“Digital and tech is an important part of the West of England’s economy and women are currently under-represented in digital roles.

“Our WIDJET project seeks to tackle this by working with a wide group of women to encourage more representative and inclusive employment in digital roles across the region.”

Though all are welcome, the course is aiming to engage with underrepresented groups, especially young females that aren’t currently in education, employment or training, young mothers and black, Asian and minority ethnic females.

boomsatsuma are also offering to subsidies child care for participants to encourage applications.

Creative projects manager Lyndsay Davies said: “We recognise that taking new leaps and learning new skills can be daunting so we’re keen to support women and girls to explore new possibilities in a safe, encouraging space.

“We want to be able to offer all participants the opportunity to learn new skills, develop their understanding of the industry, and hear from professionals already nested within it.

“Our involvement in this project has allowed us to shape a series of beginners courses that are for women and run by women.”

There are 15 places on each taster session and 15 on each course. All courses will be held at the Engine Shed, next door to Bristol Temple Meads, and will take place between September 2019 and April 2020.
