New creative workspace opens on Cheltenham Rd
‘Space at 9’ has formally opened at 9 Bath Buildings following a refit as a work hub for small, creative businesses, with tenants so far including architecture, guitar making, fashion, jewellery making, product design, laser cutting, printing, music production and design companies.
The building, located behind Kwik Fit on Cheltenham Road, has been extended by raising the roof to create an extra floor to accommodate 16 creative commercial units. Three studios are still available to rent.
Emphasising the popular philosophy of creative sharing and support, there are also open-plan communal spaces for larger projects, demonstrations and co-working.
“Demand for space is strong,” says owner Clive Hughes. “This is not a formal ‘office’ or basic ‘workshop’ but a mixture of activities with people who feel close contact to other businesses is very important.
“Space at 9 provides collaboration, work experience and support for start ups and more mature businesses with several employees. Over the last five years, start ups have become successful businesses and organisations which have outgrown the smaller studio spaces and moved on to bigger premises – often with several employees.”
