New multi-million-pound steel terminal at Bristol Port

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Sep 22, 2020

Bristol Port bosses say the opening of a multi-million-pound steel handling facility at Royal Portbury Dock bucks the trend amid a decline in infrastructure investment.

The construction of the new terminal, which took place during lockdown, came about following conversations with importers and is intended to serve markets around the Midlands and South Wales.

It is specifically designed for the handling of high quality steel coil and will expand existing capacity at the port.

James Stangroom, commercial manager at Bristol Port says the site has handled steel coil imports since early 2017.

“Discussions with importers looking for deep sea capacity gave us the confidence to invest further in this trade,” he said. “Our current warehousing has been running at high capacity for the past couple of years and so we are pleased to be able to boost this particular trade further at the port.”

GP Logistics is handling the cargo and associated services in partnership with the port.

David Pegg, commercial director at GP Logistics said: “Shipping lines have made commitments to regular calls at Royal Portbury Dock and we look forward to being of service to the wider steel community.”
