New strategic investor for Urbs Media
Paintworks-based start-up Urbs Media has announced new strategic investment from Europe’s largest independent news services company, DMA Media, after just over a year in business.
Using proprietary techniques developed in-house, news service Urbs selects and organises the large volume of open data available across geographical and thematic markets, creating highly targeted stories. Services so far include a concept site – urbs.london – and a news service for media owners, press agencies and content marketing agencies.
Enders Analysis has described the company and its methods as, “where we envisage journalism needs to go”.
DMA’s investment will allow it to grow its existing customer base and develop the creation of targeted news stories and content marketing. It will be used to establish an expanded Bristol data centre as well as an international newsroom based in London.
CEO at Urbs Alan Renwick said: “We’re delighted to have brought a world class news business on board, not just as a financial investor but with the deep expertise and network they will bring. DMA’s involvement will allow us to scale up quickly both our news production resource, and our customer base.”
DMA’s chairman Richard Sambrook, the former Director of BBC News added: “Data will feed the hunger for content in the digital age, and Urbs – with DMA’s resources – will use it to tell stories to audiences who can be targeted and tracked.”
