Robotics startup secures £1.6m funding boost

By Charlie Watts  Tuesday Sep 7, 2021

A robotics startup in Bristol which seeks to slash the cost of maintaining wind turbines has been given a huge funding boost.

Perceptual Robotics uses drones to take images of wind turbines, which are then run through an artificial-intelligence system to detect any damage.

The company was co-founded by Dimitris Nikolaidis, Kevin Driscoll-Lind and Kostas Karachalios in 2016.

The three mechanical engineering master’s graduates met at the University of Bristol and believe their drone tech reduces the cost of wind turbine maintenance by 30%.

A £1.6m funding boost from TSP Ventures, a venture capitalist firm focusing on environmental technologies, is hoped will take Perceptual Robotics to the “next level”.

Kostas Karachalios, CEO of Perceptual Robotics, said: “We already work with some of the world’s biggest wind power providers and we have been steadily growing our revenues.

“This funding will allow us to increase headcount, continue to mature our ground-breaking technology and drive the scale of our sales and marketing activities on the back of our recent successful programmes with clients across Europe.

“Perceptual Robotics started with a simple aim: to use the very latest technology to reduce the costs associated with green energy.

“We hope that with this money we will attract exceptional people to join our offices in Bristol and Athens. The future is bright and exciting.”
