South West households encouraged to apply for energy efficiency funding
South West households in Bristol, North Somerset, and Bath & North East Somerset (BANES) have been urged to apply for the ‘Bright Green Homes’ funding, a project aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and promoting the use of renewable energy. The scheme is facilitated by Bristol City Leap, a forward-thinking partnership between Bristol City Council and Ameresco, with plans to invest nearly £500 million in low carbon energy projects, creating over 1,000 jobs within its first five years.
The initiative, depending on individual circumstances, includes a variety of energy-saving measures such as insulation installations, solar panels, and heat pumps. However, these upgrades are only accessible to households that meet specific criteria: currently use Electric, Oil, LPG or Solid Fuel heating, have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of G, F, E or D, live within the designated council areas, and have an annual household income of £31,000 or lower.
To apply, households must visit the Bristol City Leap website and fill out a questionnaire that assesses their eligibility. Despite the scheme running until March 2025, households are urged to apply promptly due to anticipated high demand.
David White, Operations Director for Bristol City Leap, spoke on the benefits of the project, stating, “Our Bright Green Homes project will help reduce the energy bills of hundreds of families in Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset while tackling the climate emergency.”
Councillor Kye Dudd emphasized the scheme’s role in making Bristol a carbon-neutral city and urged eligible households to complete the online application. He further highlighted the potential for residents to save money on energy bills and improve their homes’ energy efficiency.
“Bright Green Homes is an essential part of Bristol’s commitment to become a carbon neutral city and it will also make a real difference to eligible residents in the city – saving them money on their household energy bills and making their homes more energy efficient through upgrades like better insulation.
If you think your household meets the eligibility criteria, then I urge you to complete the online questionnaire. If you have any questions about the project or eligibility criteria, please get in touch with Bristol City Leap.”
The project is supported by funding from phase 2 of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s home upgrade grant, which has already invested over £1.1 billion into improving energy efficiency for low-income households in England.
