Artist of the Month: Clare Cutts

By Bristol24/7  Monday Feb 1, 2016

Meet Clare Cutts, talented local printmaker and Bristol24/7’s second Artist of the Month.

We’re offering readers the chance to buy a limited edition Clare Cutts print created exclusively for Bristol24/7 and inspired by three trees on the Downs, once a group known as the Seven Sisters, a part of Bristol’s natural landscape that many know and love.

The print will be available to buy from our online shop at the heavily discounted price of £165, 10 per cent of which will go to Clare’s charity of choice Womankind, who work to support society’s most vulnerable and help women around the country improve their mental health and wellbeing.

Clare’s artwork is often inspired by the natural world, and the image of the towering pines said to be planted by a local doctor in commemoration of his daughters is one that repeatedly features in her prints and woodcuts – the lasercut outlines she uses to emboss her prints onto paper.

The Three Sisters was the first black and white screenprint I made, so when asked to do a limited piece for Bristol24/7 it seemed the obvious choice,” says Clare.

“I keep getting drawn back to the trees. I have three sisters myself so maybe this is why – although there is a huge amount of love and joy there, there is also pain and tension.”

Using traditional screenprinting techniques, Clare builds layer upon layer of colour to build a subtle but powerful image on paper, in a long and labour-intensive process involving huge amounts of patience and technique.

She began her love affair with screenprinting at a class at Spike Island nearly ten years ago, and since then she’s gone on to create commissioned work for the likes of John Lewis and Ralph Lauren, as well as several pieces exhibited in galleries across the UK.
