Policy Press wins international book award
Bristol University’s Policy Press has won the Frankfurt Book Fair Independent Academic & Professional Publisher of the Year 2016.
The not-for-profit press – celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year – has the dual aims of supporting the academic community and making a positive difference to society.
The Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) award is given annually to an independent academic press and is judged by a panel of publishing and bookselling experts.

The judges said: “Policy Press had a standout year in 2015, publishing a range of important, influential and well-reviewed books, experimenting with activities including short reads, apps and freemium content and hitting record turnover. It has increased sales and stepped up its publishing in a difficult market, and that takes a lot of nerve. It really punches above its weight.”
Policy Press director Alison Shaw, who founded the press in 1996, collected the award with assistant director Julia Mortimer at a gala dinner at the IPG’s annual conference.
Alison said: “We are thrilled to have been given this award in our 20th year of publishing, against stiff competition. It really is fantastic and a testament to the dedication of the whole team and to the great work of our authors and partners.”
