Bristol Bad Film Club’s Stinkerthon

By Robin Askew  Thursday Oct 15, 2015

Those brave folks from the Bristol Bad Film Club are about to redefine the concept of human suffering. Together with representatives from Bristol’s other cult film clubs – Seventyseven, Hellfire Video Club and volunteers from The Cube – they’re planning a non-stop 24 hour bad movie marathon. The event takes place on November 7 at the Benjamin Perry Boathouse. You can participate in several ways. Firstly, they want suggestions of bad films to endure. These needn’t be entertainingly awful, like most Bad Film Club selections. They could be quite unwatchable. Titles already picked include Icebreaker – a “Die Hard at a ski resort” rip off starring Sean Astin of Lord of the Rings fame; weird creature feature Octaman; and the infamous Ugandan action film Who Killed Captain Alex? You can suggest titles on the BBFC website or tweet them at @TheOtherBBFC.

They’re not just doing this for the masochism. The intention is to raise funds for Children in Need. You can sponsor them here. And if you want to feel their pain, drop in at any time from 9am on November 7 to sample the misery. But expect to be asked to use the charity bucket – preferably for donating cash.

Should that not be enough bad movie action for you, the (other) BBFC has two more public screenings before Christmas. At the Thekla on Nov 12, they’re showing Vibrations: a heart-warming 1996 drama about a homeless, handless wino who becomes the toast of the rave community. So that’s terrible music to add to the usual bad acting, dismal plotting and hopeless dialogue.

As a special festive treat at the Trinity on December 10, they’re giving us all a gift-wrapped turd in the form of the 1959 redubbed Mexican curio Santa Claus vs The Devil. This one has Beelzebub plotting to slaughter the beardy present distributor and make the world’s kids do evil. Go, Satan, go!
