Bristol Film Festival’s ‘sensory experience’

By Robin Askew  Friday Jul 1, 2016

Following a successful launch back in March, the Bristol Film Festival is staging its first summer event at the Arnolfini on Saturday, August 20.

This immersive screening series is billed as “a sensory cinema experience that will bring the sights, sounds and smells of some much loved films to life”, with appropriate “real-time lighting, sound and smell effects during the movie.” Good job they’re not showing Pink Flamingos, eh John Waters fans?

Here’s the screening programme in full:

12:30pm: Jurassic Park
Spielberg’s first dino adventure, introduced by Bristol City Museum with a talk about our own local dinosaur.

4pm: Goldfinger
The Bond flick with Mr Connery and Ms. Pussy Galore, plus a Bond theme music quiz and a Golden Gun raffle.

9pm: This Is Spinal Tap

The rock comedy classic, with prizes for the most appropriately dressed, an air guitar contest and a free spirit shot on arrival.

Over in the Arnolfini’s Dark Studio, there’s a full programme of complementary afternoon talks as follows:

12pm: Icon Films
Filmmakers from the local production company behind such hit wildlife documentaries as River Monsters screen and discuss some of their most memorable work.

2pm: Bristol History on Film
The splendid Bristol Record Office raids its archives to show how the city has been portrayed on film over the years.

4pm & 6.30pm: The Movie Lover’s Guide to Wine Tasting
Continuing the Bristol Film Festival’s partnership with Avery’s, this boozy event takes a tongue-in-cheek look at how to pair a fine wine with a fine movie. You’ll also get the chance to sample movie-related plonk, such as the inevitable Silence of the Lambs Chianti.
