Floating Cinema sets course for Bristol

By Robin Askew  Thursday Apr 16, 2015

Those lucky Londoners have enjoyed the Floating Cinema since 2013. Designed by award-winning Duggan Morris architects, this unique ‘mobile arts hub’ trundles around the capital’s waterways delivering imaginative programmes of screenings and activities. Pictured above is the cinema’s Horror Weekender at Kings Cross back in 2013. Now, for the first time, the cinema is embarking on an epic five-week tour, entitled Looping the Locks: Brentford to Bristol & Back Again.

Departing in June from Brentford Lock, the Floating Cinema will cruise serenely along the Kennet and Avon Canal across Berkshire, Wiltshire and through Bath before arriving in Bristol’s floating harbour in early July with a programme of free films, al fresco bankside screenings, workshops and talks. The publicity blurb tells us that the tour “will draw inspiration from the unique ecology, rich history and heritage of the waterways as well as key sites” with screenings of specially selected films from local and national archives co-curated by artist duo Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie (Somewhere). Artist and musician Yann Seznec will also be in residence to create “a digital library of ‘forgotten sounds’ and musical responses, created with communities along the route.”
