Preview: Tokyo World 2016

By Helen Prince  Tuesday Sep 6, 2016

On September 24 electronic music festival Tokyo World returns to Eastville Park with its biggest lineup to date. With a raft of big names drawn from grime, reggae, dub, hip-hop and techno, the fourth instalment is headlined by grime godfather Wiley.

Detroit techno legend Carl Craig is joined by Daniel Avery and Floating Points on the stage hosted by Shapes, the Bristol promoters – and recent Bristol24/7 interviewees – known around the UK for their big bookings and elaborate decor. Also involved are Livity Sound with sets from Moodyman, Palms Trax, Kowton, Peverelist and Hodge.

Wiley tops the bill on the Volcano stage with support from fellow grime dons Slimzee, Preditah and Big Narstie. The Deep Medi gang are also set to put their booming dubstep stamp on the festival, with many of the label’s favourites set to grace our Bristol fields. Mala – half of Digital Mystikz and the Deep Medi label’s founder – is set to play on the Volcano stage, while the Pulse stage will quake to sets from Goth-Trad, Commodo, Compa and Bristol’s own Kahn.  After all, what would be a Bristolian dub stage be without an appearance from Kahn?

Pulse will also be home to soundsystem reggae legends Channel One and contemporary dub producer Ishan Sound – who like Kahn is a member of Young Echo, a South-West collective focused on the latest mutations in dub, drone and bass music. Expect earth pounding rumbles.

Drum & bass lovers don’t fret – the Mutiny stage will be there to exhilarate your ears. Drum & bass veteran Randall will be blaring out breakbeats alongside Breakage, Ed Rush and DJ Hype.

This year the Tokyo World site is being increased to avoid noise clashes between stages that were reported last year (you’ll be glad to hear this means higher volumes).

With such recent success and a limit on available capacity, the Tokyo World team have hinted at the possibility of a whole weekend festival next year with music ending at 11pm on Saturday and 10pm on Sunday.

With something for every dance music lover, book off your calendar and dig out your waviest threads. Tokyo World 2016 is the bang you need to go out with to brilliantly end this year’s festival season.
