Alex Does Coffee – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 21, 2016

The clue is in the name. Alex does coffee at Alex Does Coffee on Old Market Street and Alex does coffee very well indeed.

It’s the latest opening in a road not so long ago down on its luck which now is slowly pulling itself up by its bootstraps thanks to the arrival of the likes of the Old Market Assembly and Wardrobe Theatre, and To the Moon just around the corner on Midland Road.

And then there are the imminent arrivals on the ground floor of the former Methodist Central Hall of a Spanish tapas bar and No. 25a from the team behind No. 12 Easton.

Chris from No. 12 was one of the first customers of Alex Does Coffee on a recent Tuesday morning, introducing himself and complementing Alex behind the bar on the design’s simple aesthetics before getting a flat white to go and returning over the road where a plumber and electrician were working with an estimated four weeks to go until No. 25a opens for business.

Alex was formerly an in-house barista at a law firm and has opened her first cafe as part of Two’s Company Studios, sharing the ground floor with a screenprinting company who have printed her loyalty cards; and with artists studios and creative workspaces on the two floors above.

The coffee served here is from Extract in St Werburgh’s, with a double espresso from £1.50. Then there is tea, and other options chalked up on a blackboard above the custom made moveable bar as ‘not coffee’ – chai latte, and dark and white hot chocolate.

Bottles of cold brew are also available, made concentrated and then diluted with mineral water. The bottle design is the same as the logo handpainted on the window of the cafe, which has a minimal look of a bare concrete floor, whitewashed walls, and tables, chairs and benches made from reclaimed wood.

“It’s been on the cards for a year so it’s been a long time coming,” Alex tells one customer, adding excitingly: “But there is so much happening along this street.”
