Curtis & Bell

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 3, 2014

Those with a sweet tooth are being spoilt in Bristol at the moment, with Curtis & Bell’s French-style patisserie following swiftly in the footsteps of Zara’s Chocolates just a few doors away on North Street and Ahh Toots in St Nicks Market.

If ever what a business offered was made for Instagram, it’s this. Although it’s amazing that the beautiful looking tarts, macarons and parfaits have remained uneaten long enough to be photographed.

A new decking area has been created outside since this was Cafe Sazz, but the inside is disappointingly bland – the plain white walls and long white counter in no way being a reliable indication of the treats lurking within.

All the food is made on the premises. There are butter crepes with butterscotch apples (£4.25) and toasted brioche with fruit compote (£3.95) among the breakfast options served from 8am, savoury brioche sandwiches sandwiches for lunch, and parfaits (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or banana) for £4.75.

From 6pm, you can choose a classic French cheese, charcuterie or Gallic cassoulet, all served with a glass of wine.

In a rush to get to a meeting on the other side of town, I had two Madeleines for £1.30, soft and fluffy with that just-got-out-of-the-oven smell – a real taste of France in the heart of Bedminster.
