Didn’t You Do Well

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 2, 2014

Didn’t you do well. A sentence said to many a Bristol business owner when they open their premises for the first time. Now, a Bristol business is actually called Didn’t You Do Well. This new cafe on Park Row follows the expert coffee trend started by Small Street EspressoSmall Street Espresso, with their own coffee created by a beast of a machine by the name of Slayer, handcrafted in Seattle.

Didn’t You Do Well is certainly an unusual name for a cafe. It comes from what the grandad of owner Will Ireland used to say to him. Any resemblance to the Bruce Forsyth catchphrase is purely coincidental.

The name may be unusual and so is the coffee from Hasbean, made to perfection yesterday on the first day of opening. “We have sugar, but we recommend you try our coffees without,” says a note on the menu.

Coffee is taken very seriously here, with two beans currently on offer: Finca Loayza Feliciano Ramos from Bolivia and Inglaterra Canario from Brazil. In brew only is Ethiopia’s Yirgacheffe Wote.

That means nothing to me either, but I can confirm that the coffee is very good indeed, and a perfect accompaniment to the Hart’s BakeryHart’s BakeryHart’s Bakery goodies on the counter – which yesterday were carrot cake and chocolate chip cookies.

Tea comes from Waterloo Gardens and soft drinks from Lovely. And refreshingly, that’s about it from a business that is concentrating on doing one thing very well.
