Earthcake – cafe review
Graffiti, minimalist décor and veganism. Welcome to Earthcake on North Street, where – on entering – Anthony Kiedis’ sultry tones immediately sweep over you and you feel at ease.
It’s a tiny establishment in a former language school, with less than a dozen available, and feels almost like you’re sitting in a show home. It’s all earthy colours: pistachio and tangerine on the wall, bare wooden floors and a brick counter from which to order.
A spray-painted version of the whisk logo has been emblazoned on one wall by a tattoo artist friend, the owner tells me proudly.
is needed now More than ever
The array of cakes is mouthwatering. There are carrot cakes, fruit cakes, a dark Belgian chocolate and caramel tart, as well as a delightful looking selection of mini cakes (all at £1 apiece).
All made in-house, the cakes can be ordered in bulk, and cakes and sandwiches can also be ordered for special events.
When the coffee is ordered, a choice of non-animal milk is offered: oat, almond, soy and coconut.
The flat white with almond milk is slightly sweet and has a pleasant almondy smoothness. To mop up the coffee, a slice of the glistening dark Belgian chocolate tart is ordered, and it’s delicious, with a crisp base and a smooth caramel and chocolate filling, there’s little not to enjoy. And the mince pie which I scoff on the way home is jolly tasty too.
I am alone for most of the time I sit there, but the owner tells me it has been manic at weekends, and as she speaks, two tattooed, pierced cool kids walk in and place their orders, as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers fade to the even sultrier tones of London Grammar in North Street’s newest haunt.
