Sundaes Gelato
On Baldwin Street, Reflex has now become Pop World – its illuminated sign bright enough to light the Three Kings’ route to Bethlehem.
Directly opposite is Sundaes Gelato, a new emporium of sickly sweet treats with probably the same number of flashing lights and music policy as the new nightclub over the road.
You can’t help but feel like a big kid when confronted by ice cream cones covered in chocolate, hundreds and thousands, and a choice of dozens of flavours.
is needed now More than ever
There are familiar flavours such as mango, lemon and pineapple; familiar brands in frozen form such as Oreo, Bounty and Kinder Bueno; less familiar flavours in frozen form such as apple pie and even Eton mess; and then mysterious unnamed creations mostly in lurid colours such as the cobalt blue “bubblelicious”.
After my £2 scoop of chocolate orange, I felt as if I’d downed a double espresso so wide were my eyes. My three-year-old daughter meanwhile was literally bouncing off the walls after her scoop of tutti-frutti.
A waffle the other side of the table at least came with the health-giving benefits of bananas and strawberries. More soft than crispy, it didn’t let the side down with a liberal sprinkling of white chocolate shavings and a tower of vanilla ice cream.
On the menu there are also sundaes from £5.95 up to £8.95, crepes from £3.50 to £5.95, and slices of cake, profiteroles and cannoli all for £4.95. Among the drinks, I counted 17 different coffee syrups. There are also frappes, milkshakes and smoothies.
Sundaes Gelato is the first in what Essex-based ice cream and coffee equipment business Coffee and Ice hope can become a national franchise.
Open until midnight seven days a week, it could become all things to all people. But if you’re over the age of 11 or not in some serious need of the munchies, then it really is not that appealing at all.
