Pop-up clothing lab, Shwop & Sew at Broadmead
Matt Chapple, the winner of last year’s Great British Sewing Bee, will make an appearance in Bristol this week at Shwop & Sew, a pop-up lab run by Marks and Spencer at their Broadmead store as part of BIG Green Week.
From 19-20 June, this free event invites the people of Bristol to bring along their damaged or unwanted items of clothing to swap with others or learn to repair.
Guided workshops including tote bag-making and button-sewing are on offer, as well as ‘Refashion’ challenges and ‘Sewing Surgery’ classes.
is needed now More than ever
Chapple will be joined by fellow finalist Tamara Melvin, who is running a trouser-altering masterclass, alongside the GBSB producer Claire-Louise Hardie, who will advise visitors how to repair items selected from a rail.
Chapple commented: ‘I’m really excited to be a part of Bristol BIG Green Week and it’s great to see the community coming together to support sustainability’.
BIG Green Week uses free events throughout the city to promote sustainable living. Reusing and upcycling clothes has had a significant impact on landfill figures: in Bristol alone, around 87,000 items have already been ‘Shwopped’.
The Shwop & Sew Lab, located in the Bristol Broadmead M&S store on the ground floor, will be open to the public from 12 – 7pm on Friday 19 June, and 10:30am – 7pm on Saturday 20 June, and there will be an opportunity to watch sewers at work from a viewing area. Workshops will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. All workshops and materials are provided free of charge, thanks to Prym, Pfaff and Gutterman.
