10 fresh water swimming spots near or in Bristol

By Freya Spear  Thursday Jun 9, 2016

With Summer just round the corner (or Britain’s version of Summer anyway) it’s time to don a sunhat, slap on that sun-cream and dig out those Speedos from the back of the wardrobe. Instead of suffering on overcrowded, littered beaches, why not take a dip in a river or lake to relax at some of the most beautiful fresh water swimming spots in or near Bristol (we urge caution when wild swimming – see notes at the bottom of the page).

1. Henleaze Lake, Lake Road, Henleaze

This lake is used for swimming and angling. With springboards, fixed diving boards and a sauna this club is for elite members only. A haven for wildlife and varying water depths only members and their guests can enjoy this beautiful spot. So start making those connections. For more details and opening seasons click here.

2. Saltford Weir 30-40mins

Accessible from Bristol through the bike path, this spot is conveniently near The Jolly Sailor for your after-swim drink – NOT the other way around. You will be greeted by grassy picnic areas, rope swings and small, secluded spots as you soak up the sun.

3. Kensington Meadows, Bath 35-45mins

Access from Morrisons Supermarket carpark or from Ringswell Gardens. If you’re not too fussed on glamour, this flat and pathed site does what it says on the tin. A lovely river next to the nature reserve will be ideal for the solo swimmer. Part of the river Avon.

4. Warleigh Weir, near Claverton 40-1hr

One of the most popular sites on the list, an early start is recommended. A large site suitable for swimming, paddling and playing for all the family. With secret spots a short walk down the river, beautiful adjoining fields. Just watch out for those hidden plants in parts of the river.

5. River Avon, north of Dundas Aquduct 35-40mins

A brilliant place for an extended, relaxed swim due to the wide, deep and slow-moving river. Situated in a perfect picnic area however there are no shallows so you’ll need to just go for it. For the more advanced swimmer, how about the challenge of swimming to Claverton Weir (1h45mins approximately)?

6. River Yeo, Yatton 1hr

A surprisingly remote location and great for a quick escape from the city. With clear water running between steep grassy banks to sunbathe on, all you need is a glass of fresh lemonade (minus the accompanying wasps).

7. Lacock Abbey, Lacock 50min

Shallower areas closer to the abbey means this river is perfect for a family day out. A good area to explore then cool off in the flowing water. Watch out for the small rapids further down.

8. Barton Farm, Bradford on Avon 45mins

Another popular family spot, this river is suitable for all ages. A shallow side stream, bridges and stones to jump off of and easy access to the water, the wide banks provide a great picture opportunity. Take caution jumping into the river as submerged objects could send your peaceful day to the hospital.

9. River Frome, near Tellisford 40-50min

Trees and the hillside provide a scenic setting for this river and weir. A rural location, the site is not as developed as others so just watch out for submerged objects and the changing water depth. A beautiful day out.

10. Farleigh and District Swimming club, Wiltshire 50-1hr

Run by committee, Farleigh boasts the only river swimming club left in the country. The water is fresh, with a deep area above the weir for long swims. There are toilets and changing rooms available. There is also a large car park a short distance from the river. Members go free and there is only a very small charge for the day – definitely worth a visit. CAUTION: Fresh water swimming is always advised through a formal swimming club. Although it is hot outside, it can be deceptively cold in the water even for experienced swimmers. Strong currents and the danger of weirs can also affect the ability of even the strongest swimmers. For more advice, visit Avon Fire & Rescue.
