Fresh strikes will shut Winterbourne school
Teachers at Winterbourne International Academy will strike again this week over an on-going dispute with the principal who they claim branded them “lazy”.
Unions have said Beverley Martin, the executive chief principle, had helped create a “climate of fear” at the school.
The school, on High Street, Winterbourne, sent a letter to parents this morning saying further strikes will take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
is needed now More than ever
The letter said that despite “significant progress” in negotiations with the NUT and NASUWT, the unions had decided to take further industrial action.
The school was closed to years 7,8 and 9 when staff went on strike on Thursday, September 10.
This week’s strike action will see the school closed for students of years 7-11, the letter from the school said.
The school was deemed to be in need of improvement at the last Ofsted inspection in April, following a “good” rating three years ago.
A joint statement issued by the unions last Wednesday said: “The main issue is around a punitive accountability regime, which takes away the professionalism of teachers and has created a climate of fear and policies that are not fit for purpose.”
