The five projects for the 12,000-capacity venue range from what looks like a glowing soap dish to a less elaborate version of Beijing’s ‘bird’s nest’ stadium.

Entries are from firms with portfolios including London’s Olympic Stadium and the Eden Project in Cornwall. However, competition organisers the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have keept tight-lipped about who designed what.

The designs were revealed to the public in January and people were asked to comment on the five potential designs. The competition panel met at the end of February to assess the tenders and consider comments from the public.

The 12,000 capacity arena is set to be located on the former diesel depot site next to Bristol Temple Meads.
