Bristol to host opposing refugee protests

By Bristol24/7  Friday May 20, 2016

Two opposing immigration demonstrations are due to take place in Bristol city centre.

Far right group Bristol Unity Demo plan to march opposite the Hippodrome on June 4 to “say no to refugees” and the spread of “Islamic grooming gangs”.

A separate demonstration named Keep Racism out of the Referendum, organised by Stand Up to Racism, will hold a rally on the same day.

Immigration protests clashed on College Green in October last year.

A spokesperson for Stand Up to Racism Bristol said: “We are holding our rally to send out the important message that many Bristolians welcome refugees and are appalled at the government’s seeming reluctance to allow more refugees fleeing war and poverty into Britain.”

Bristol Unity Demo have been promoting their demonstration, which is due to start two hours later at 2pm, through Facebook.

A statement says: “We will also be demonstrating to show our disgust that Bristol did not hold a single official St George’s Day event because it was felt that the city is ‘too diverse’. This is our city, this is our country.”

A police spokesperson said officers will be in dialogue with both sets of protesters leading up to the demonstrations. They added: “Our top priority as always is public safety.”
