End in sight for derelict Lockleaze pub?

By Martin Booth  Friday Jan 23, 2015

With the regeneration of Gainsborough Square in Lockleaze almost complete, one eyesore remains.

The Gainsborough pub could be subject to a compulsory purchase order (CPO) from Bristol City Council but residents are hopeful that it can be brought back into use for the community.

Known locally as the Blue Boy, the pub shut four years ago. Boarded up and covered in graffiti, it is now in stark contrast to the square around it which has benefited from a £2 million investment scheme.

Councillors Estella Tincknell and Gill Kirk hope to resolve the issue soon.

Tinknell said: “We can tell you that local residents are extremely unhappy that it has been an eyesore for so long, and especially now the square has been improved.”

She added: “Of course, it is privately owned which makes it harder for the council to  intervene. However, Gill and I are working towards a solution that will bring the site back into use and we are pleased that the mayor is supporting us in this.

“A CPO is one of the tools that could be used for this but we’re hopeful that progress can be made without one.”
