Huge fire rips through Bristol Uni halls

By Bristol24/7  Monday Oct 12, 2015

A major fire broke out in University of Bristol student halls of residence on Colston Street on Monday.

At its height more than 40 firefighters fought the blaze, which is believed to have started in a kitchen soon before 1pm.

Smoke billowed across the city centre as flames ripped through the roof and upper levels of the building near the Colston Hall.

Eyewitnesses working on Colston Tower saw the fire catch hold in one corner of the building, which has recently been renovated, and spread across the entire roof.

Nobody is thought to have been inside the building and there are no reports of any injuries. Students were seen on the streets in their dressing gowns as the building was evacuated.

Residents at 33 Colston Street were set to receive a meal on Monday evening at The Hawthorns, another university halls of residence. Students also reportedly received clothes and vouchers to spend at Tesco and Primark.

Colston Street was closed to traffic for most of the day. But Colston Hall confirmed that the Editors and Simone Felice gigs scheduled on Monday evening would still go ahead as planned.
