Prince St reopens after heat jams bridge open
Prince Street bridge is now open again to cars, cyclists and pedestrians after getting jammed open on Wednesday morning.
The heat over the last 24 hours caused the bridge to expand, which meant that operators were unable to close it again and the council were forced to close Prince Street.
Engineers were deployed and managed to get the bridge working again within 30 minutes, although with temperatures expected to rise to 30C in Bristol today, the council has confirmed that they will not risk swinging the bridge again for the rest of today.
Peter Mann, Service Director for Transport for Bristol City Council said: “We appreciate that the situation is frustrating for boat users who were relying on the bridge opening today, however Prince Street is a very popular route for all road users and we must avoid disruption where possible.”
Mann added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we will resume normal operation as soon as possible.
“Mitigating this problem will be a priority during future maintenance of the bridge.”
