Bristol’s Kerry McCarthy into shadow cabinet

By Louis Emanuel  Monday Sep 14, 2015

Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy has been named as the new shadow Environment Secretary.

The appointment comes a week after she reintroduced her food waste reduction bill into Parliament.

Elected in 2005 to one of the safest Labour seats in the West County, McCarthy used to work as a lawyer and then as head of public policy at a consultancy.

Her new role was announced after leader Jeremy Corbyn was criticised for not appointing enough females to his shadow cabinet.

McCarthy, who is one of a handful of vegans in the House of Commons, backed Andy Burnham for the Labour leadership before the polls closed last Thursday.
