Rose giveaway for immigrants

By Sophie Ellis  Monday Jun 27, 2016

A Bristol woman has challenged the UK-wide rise in racist incidents following Brexit – with flowers.

She has placed a bucket full of roses outside a shop on Gloucester Road and the message on the bucket invites immigrants to take a rose reminding them that Bristol chose to stay in the EU.

The roses were put outside Playfull toyshop on Saturday by a friend of the owners. Kirsten, who works in the shop, says: “There has been a very popular response from people in the neighbourhood.”

Patricia Alvarez, owner of next-door health food shop La Ruca, says “it’s an excellent idea” adding that Gloucester Road “belongs to everyone”.

The original Facebook post on Best of Bristol has attracted huge social media interest

The reactions to the rose giveaway has been overwhelming; the original Facebook post has been liked more than 10,000 times.

It has also received hundreds of likes on Instagram, producing comments such as ‘Good old Bristol spreading the love!!’ and ‘Stuff like this makes me really happy I decided to settle in Bristol :)’.
