Rees announces he will close strip clubs
Labour’s mayoral candidate Marvin Rees is aiming to close the gender pay gap and shut down strip bars in Bristol, under new promises unveiled on International Women’s Day.
Speaking at his old school, City Academy, Rees also pledged to make his cabinet 50 per cent female if elected in May.
“Women play a huge and vital role in making our city the vibrant, thriving place that it is. I want my daughter to grow up knowing she is just as good as her brothers, and I want the women in this city to know that their contribution is just as valuable as that of their male counterparts,” he told pupils.
is needed now More than ever
Rees plans to eliminate the gender and race pay gap by setting up a mayoral commission to investigate how this can be achieved in Bristol.
In his speech he also unveiled his commitment to rid Bristol from sexual entertainment venues, tackle FGM and make victims of domestic abuse a priority on the housing list.
Campaigners want victims to be upgraded to Band 1 status on the housing register. The Tories have tabled a motion at the March full council in a bid to make the change.
The current mayor George Ferguson’s cabinet is made up of three women and three men, including himself. However, Danielle Radice and Fi Hance job share the role for neighbourhood, health, leisure and sport.
