Avon Wildlife Trust receives grant of over £235,000
Avon Wildlife Trust has received a grant of over £235,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to help establish a network of Wildlife Champions across the region.
As part of the Team Wilder approach, this funding will be invested in continuing to facilitate a movement focused on community action for nature, which includes peer-led advice and training.
Team Wilder encourages people to share their actions towards nature, motivating and inspiring others with what it has learned and achieved.
is needed now More than ever
Julie Doherty, head of communities and engagement at Avon Wildlife Trust emphasised the importance of community led-activities, which aim to reach the one-in-four people taking action for nature by 2030.

“This project is designed to resource and connect community-led activity, and champion nature in our everyday lives. We’ll be providing free ecological advice for residents across Avon, and supporting local champions to help create a wilder, nature-rich future for all.
“We’re delighted to have received this support for our Wildlife Champions project, thanks to the National Lottery players,” she added.
Stuart McLeod, director at the National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “At the Heritage Fund, we’re incredibly proud to be playing a role in ensuring our natural heritage and amazing wildlife is safeguarded for generations to come.”
The initial network of 12 volunteers will co-design work with their local communities, with special attention to areas of ‘social and nature’ deprivation in the region.
Avon Wildlife Trust has recruited a community ecologist, to facilitate this, and will be hiring a Wildlife Champions Programme Assistant.
Both roles aim to support the development of the Wildlife Champions programme, coordinating training and resources, as well as providing communities and individuals with advice to enhance their actions toward nature.
