Bristol named as one of the best cities in the UK at recycling food waste
According to a recent study conducted by AEG, Bristol recycles 10,000 tonnes of food waste each year.
The study looked into UK cities which produce the most food waste and their recycling processes through recycling caddies – only 59 per cent of UK councils have this feature available.
This research found that the most wasted foods are fresh, as opposed to frozen, including vegetables (25 per cent), and fruits (22 per cent).
is needed now More than ever
What’s even more concerning is that out of the average 28.1kg of food waste produced by UK households each month, approximately 19.6kg of this is perfectly fit to be consumed.
AEG have emphasised the importance of correct food storage.
“Food wastage is a complex issue that simply cannot disappear overnight,” a spokesperson said.
“However, as can be seen in the findings reducing this level of waste really does begin at home. Correct food storage has never been more important as well as being resourceful with the food we buy.
“Everybody wants to get the most out of each shop, so prepping beforehand with a list and meal plan for the week ahead is a great method to keep costs and wastage down,” AEG said.
Even if preventing food waste is the first step, correct recycling of the latter is vital to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Recycle Now, when the recycling process is not done correctly, food waste may be sent to landfills where it will release methane, which is more harmful than carbon dioxide.
If you or anyone in your household is unsure about food waste recycling, Bristol City Council has an informative list of what goes in the waste bin.
