Campaigners object to multiple new ad screens across Bristol
Adblock Bristol is inviting citizens to object to new ad screens due to be installed in different bus stops across the city.
Clear Channel, an advertising company, has applied to install three adverts on Fishponds Road, Hengrove Way, and Wells Road.
According to Adblock, each screen uses, on average, the same amount of electricity as three to four homes. Amidst the energy and climate crisis, they’re raising questions about the environmental impact of this proposal.
is needed now More than ever
Henry Kenyon from the Adblock Bristol team, and Fishponds resident, said: “Ad company Clear Channel has framed their applications as ‘decluttering’, but when digital adverts can be cycled through at six per minute, rather than as paper ads, manually changed once every two weeks, it is plainly about profit.”
He highlighted the “contradiction” between citizens saving energy while companies are proposing adverts that consume considerable amounts of it.
“One rule for us, another for them. Many Bristolians are cutting back, concerned about their environmental impact. By adding more screens to our streets, Clear Channel’s candle burns very, very brightly, while we’re putting ours out,” Kenyon added.
In 2022, Adblock worked on researching the impact of digital billboards on the well-being of those living near them.
The key findings showed different complaints, from the ecological impacts of light pollution to the climate impacts of the consumerism model promoted on billboards. Other studies show that it might be a distraction to drivers, then affecting road safety.
Other environmental impacts include the carbon footprint of the construction and the materials used, such as steel, glass, and some minerals.
A step-by-step guide to object the planned ad screens can be found here.
