Crowdfunder to fight Bristol Airport expansion raises over £13k in three days

By Valentina Hernández Gómez  Thursday Feb 9, 2023

Following the High Court’s decision to green light the expansion of Bristol Airport on January 31, Bristol Airport Action Network (BAAN) have launched a fundraising campaign on Crowd Justice, a crowdfunding platform for legal action.

The group aimed to raise £14,000, but within just three days of the launch, the campaigners had already raised £13,500. The money will be used to cover all the legal costs.

The legal fight against Bristol Airport’s expansion date back to 2018, when the plans of increasing the passenger numbers and flight frequency were revealed.

BAAN’s website explains the legal path the group’s appeals have taken: “The Judge in the High Court has rejected our statutory appeal and has said the expansion of Bristol Airport can go ahead. We have taken legal advice from our King’s Counsel and she tells us that we have several grounds for appeal.”

BAAN has spent four years battling these plans with a team of unpaid volunteers, so the fundraising is crucial to cover the legal costs.

BAAN announced the news via Twitter, adding that if the case for their appeal is accepted, the crowdfunding will be resumed.

Stephen Clarke, campaigner and member of BAAN said: “We just cannot allow this decision to stand. There are too many points of local and national significance. Perhaps the most important from a national perspective concerns the question of exactly where decisions involving huge extra amounts of carbon emissions should be decided; is it locally or nationally.”
