‘We want to be an environmentally inspiring venue’

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Nov 22, 2022

An electric van featuring Bristol Beacon’s new branding is part of the organisation’s ambitious new sustainability plans that they say encompass much more than just the measures being introduced as part of the concert venue’s refurbishment.

Ten Bristol Beacon staff have become ‘green champions’ to look at every aspect of what the charity does, with their first task to investigate visitor and artist travel and behaviour.

A series of workshops will lead to the creation of a sustainability travel plan for visitors with incentives for green travel and guidelines for artists to encourage them to reduce their footprint as much as possible.

Bristol Beacon – which is set to reopen its main hall in 2023 – is aiming to become the first net zero concert hall in the UK by 2030.

The Beacon team have already been working closely with their compatriots at the Sydney Opera House, which became the first arts venue in the world to achieve carbon neutral status in 2018.

“Bristol Beacon is a symbol of hope and community in Bristol, and we believe passionately that we have a responsibility to deliver our programme of music and the arts in a way that gives thought to the environment,” said Bristol Beacon chief executive Louise Mitchell.

“We want to be an environmentally inspiring venue for decades to come.”
