Arnolfini to reopen with major new exhibition
Arnolfini will reopen at the end of July 2020 with a new major exhibition by Hassan Hajjij.
Reopening on Thursday, July 30, the gallery will be the first art space in the city to exhibit Hajjaj’s photogaphy, which explore global culture.
Hassan Hajjij: The Path is a showcase of the Morrocon-British artist’s work with colours, patterns, appropriated brand logos and found objects. The new exhibition will show work from previous series by the photographer, including Dakka Marrakchia, which challenges stereotypes of Islamic women as subjugated and disempowered and Between, which dispels the idea that people of the developing world such as refugees and migrants are “extras” in the drama of globalisation.
is needed now More than ever
“Hassan’s show is a wonderful way to reopen Arnolfini’s galleries; accessible, challenging and vibrant work from an artist at the forefront of contemporary practice,” says Arnolfini executive director Gary Topp.
“We have been in discussions with Hassan about coming to Arnolfini since November last year, with a view to the exhibition opening this March.”

“Events were obviously overtaken by Covid-19,” Topp adds. “But we’re delighted Hassan’s show has now finally come to fruition and we can welcome everyone safely back into Bristol’s Centre for International Contemporary Arts.”
The launch of Hassan Hajjij: The Path encourages conversations both across city and continents, where cultural identity is seen as fluid and multiple.
The exhibition is part of a wider programme featuring family workshops and screenings both in-house at Arnolfini and available online running until November 1, 2020.
