Art Fair in Stokes Croft will raise money for ‘kill the bill’ defendants

By Mia Vines Booth  Friday Apr 29, 2022

123space in Stokes Croft is hosting ART FAIR for: PROTEST this Sunday.

The art fair will feature art stalls, an exhibition from Bristol-based artists, a clothes swap, live screen printing and music. There will also be info-stalls from Bristol-based activist groups.

Profits from the event will be donated to the Anarchist Black Cross, who are providing continuous support for those facing legal consequences of the ‘kill the bill’ protests in Bristol in 2021.

The event comes after the announcement by the government on Tuesday night that the controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill had been approved by the House of Lords after its initial rejection in March.

Speaking about the new bill, one of the event’s organisers, who preferred not to be named, said: “This infringement upon our right to protest is a matter we should all be concerned with right now.

“Bristol is home to a community that has suffered alarming consequences of standing up to a system that smacks of authoritarianism; the repercussions have been disproportionate, unjust and painful.”

They describe the fair as “necessary to create a support network for the Bristol community.

“We’ve found ourselves in consistent need of establishing ways for us to support each other during this time.”

The upcoming event will raise money to subsidise an activist group providing legal, psychological and other forms of support for those facing charges for the ‘kill the bill’ protests in Bristol last year.

“The event is a fundraiser at its core, but, equally importantly, it is an opportunity for people to gather, to share concerns, sorrows, frustrations, as well as hope and happiness,” they said.

Stokes Croft Art fair for: PROTEST will take place on Saturday, May 1 between 10am and 2pm.
